Baby yarn: how to choose
Knitting for a child is a practical way to make comfortable clothes that fit. But choosing the right yarn for children's knits can feel like a puzzle. Here is what actually matters when you pick yarn for the little ones.
At Hollywool we keep a dedicated Baby Yarn category: fibres that are gentle on sensitive skin, hypoallergenic, absorb moisture and let it breathe.
What is baby yarn?
Baby yarn is yarn spun specifically for children's clothes and accessories. Compared with ordinary yarn it is softer, hypoallergenic and safer for a child's skin. It can be made from many fibres: natural ones like wool, cotton or bamboo, or synthetics such as acrylic and microfibre. Each has its pros and cons.
What to consider when choosing
The right choice depends on the child's age, the season, the colour and the thickness of the thread. For newborns, go for fine, soft merino or cotton that will not irritate delicate skin. For older children, a wool blend or acrylic-blend yarn works well. Mind the season: warm and fluffy for winter, light and airy for summer. And let the colour match the child's taste, and the rest of their wardrobe.
Natural or synthetic?
Natural yarn absorbs moisture well, keeps warmth and feels pleasant to the touch, but it can cause allergies in some children or shrink in the wash. Synthetic yarn is cheaper, brighter and resists wear and deformation, yet it can be stiff, build up static and hold its shape poorly.
Both have their place. Wool or cotton gives the thermoregulation and breathability that matter so much for babies; microfibre or acrylic is practical, hard-wearing and comes in the bright colours children love.
Knitting children's clothes
Safety and comfort come first in children's knitwear, so the yarn does the heavy lifting. Take the child's age, measurements and habits into account. For newborns choose light, soft cotton or bamboo and thin needles; for older children you can take warmer, denser yarn and bigger needles or a hook. The season matters too: warm, lofty wool or alpaca for winter knits, light cotton or linen for summer ones.
