Organic first

What sets BC Garn apart is how much of the range carries GOTS, the leading standard for organic textiles. GOTS covers environmental and social criteria along the whole chain, from fibre to finished yarn, so the certificate on the product page is doing a lot of quiet work. The four lines below are all GOTS-certified — and each plays a different role in your knitting life.

Bio Balance: two seasons in one ball

BC Garn Bio Balance GOTS blends 55% wool with 45% cotton, and both fibres are organic. The wool gives bounce and warmth, the cotton keeps things light and breathable, so the yarn sits comfortably in the gap between seasons — but it knits just as happily into summer tops and children's things. A 50 g ball, 3 mm needles, 30 colours: a plain, dependable worker. If your first child's sweater is ahead of you, this composition is one of the least risky choices there is. As always, the band has the last word on care.

Bio Shetland: a colourwork home base

BC Garn Bio Shetland GOTS is 100% organic wool: 280 m on 50 g, Light Fingering, a gauge of 24 sts per 10 cm, needles 2.5–4 mm, and a palette of 71 colours that are picked to combine. That last point matters more than it sounds: when nearly any three shades already agree, lopapeysa, mittens and colourwork hats stop needing a colour-matching session. Do not expect silky softness — this is honest, characterful wool that earns its keep in wear; many knitters find the fabric mellows and tightens up nicely after its first wash. A gauge swatch before a big colourwork project is not optional here: a 24-stitch fabric behaves very differently from a chunky knit.

Alba: cotton you won't want to put down

BC Garn Alba GOTS is 100% organic cotton, 160 m on 50 g, Sport weight, 24 sts per 10 cm, needles 3–3.5 mm, 77 colours. The thread is smooth and matte with a moderate twist, so the fabric comes out even, with tidy V-shaped stitches. Cotton has little elasticity, which shapes how you use it: ribbing and heavy texture travel badly, while lace and stockinette look immaculate. Two working tips from experience: wooden or bamboo needles grip cotton better than metal, and don't re-knit the same stretch too often — the fibre tires. Summer tops, dresses, baby garments and anything for skin that dislikes wool: Alba territory.

Hamelton Tweed 1: fast and warm

BC Garn Hamelton Tweed 1 GOTS is the quick-result corner of the brand: Aran weight, 100 m on 50 g, 18 sts per 10 cm, needles 4.5–5.5 mm, 90% organic wool with 10% viscose and the tweed speckles that give the line its name, across 19 colours. Thick yarn means visible progress: a hat in an evening, a sweater in a couple of calm weeks. The wool keeps it warm, the tweed flecks keep it from looking flat. Ideal gift-knitting territory.
