Pattern Details

The hat is knitted in the round from the bottom up. The main pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches.

Ribbing patterns by size:

• Size 52-54: ribbing 21312*1 (2 knit, 1 purl, 3 knit, 1 purl, 2 knit, 1 purl repeat)
• Size 55-57: ribbing 31213*1 (3 knit, 1 purl, 2 knit, 1 purl, 3 knit, 1 purl repeat)

Work Process

Cast on 80/88/96 stitches on circular needles plus 1 stitch to join in the round, slipping the first stitch over the last one. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.

Start knitting with the ribbing pattern after the beginning of round marker. Knit 12 rows of ribbing for sizes 52-54 and 55-57, and 8 rows for size 58-60. Then proceed to the main pattern, knitting 9/10/11 knit stitches followed by 1 purl stitch repeated for 8 sections.

Knit 42-44 rows (~16-17 cm), then start decreases:

• 1st row: knit 2 stitches together with right slant, then 7/8/9 knit, 1 purl repeat
• 2nd row: knit according to pattern – 8/9/10 knit, 1 purl repeat

Continue decreases on odd rows knitting 2 stitches together and following the pattern until 16 stitches remain. On the last row, knit purl stitches together with knit stitches as knit with right slant, leaving 8 stitches.

Switch to double-pointed needles near the crown if desired. Draw through remaining stitches with yarn and secure.

Blocking

After finishing, tuck in ends and perform blocking. Wash gently in cool water with a special agent such as Hollywool solid or liquid soap without lanolin. Do not wring; squeeze in a towel. Dry flat away from heat and direct sunlight.
