Jeu de motifs Snood

A simple voluminous snood knitted in the round with English rib and a decorative edge.

Matériels:

• Soft and non-prickly 100% wool BC Garn Semilla Grosso (80m/50g, 2 skeins)
• For edging: 1 skein of Kremke Bebe Soft Wash (140m/50g) in a contrasting color or any other yarn of similar yardage
• Circular needles 5.5 and 6 mm with a 40 or 50 cm cable
• Double-pointed needles 3 mm for knitting the cord

Recommended gauge: 15 stitches per 10 cm in stockinette stitch using 6 mm needles.

Work process:

Cast on 71 stitches and join to knit in the round. You will have 70 stitches on your needles for knitting.

First row: slip the first stitch with a yarnover, knit the next stitch, repeat to the end of the row.

Second row: knit the yarnover and the stitch together as a purl stitch, slip the next stitch with a yarnover, repeat to the end of the row.

Repeat the first and second rows to a height of 26-28 cm.

The last row before transitioning to the snood’s decorative finish is knitted in a 1×1 rib. Still 70 stitches on the needles.

Having knitted the main fabric, now proceed to work on the decorative edge for the cord.

Switch to 5.5 mm needles.

With the contrasting thread, knit 70 stitches in stockinette for 8 cm or 15 rows.

Here we recommend using a slightly thinner yarn so that the textural transition is visible in the finished product. In our case, Kremke Bebe Soft Wash (100% merino) was used in double strands (half a skein for the decorative part and the cord).

In the 5th row, make a hole for the cord. Knit to the place where your cords will be, knit two stitches together with a right slant, then make 2 yarnovers (in the next row we will knit them as 2 knit stitches), then knit 2 stitches together with a left slant. Continue knitting to the desired height. Before starting the 16th row, stop knitting. The 16th row will be ketted to the inner decorative edge.

For this, fold the contrasting decorative part of the knitting in half. Leave a thread from the skein about 4 widths of the snood and cut the thread from the skein, then thread it into a needle. Kettle the free edge of the product as shown in the pictures.

Cord:

The cord is knitted using the i-cord method from Kremke Bebe Soft Wash in a single strand.

Cast on 4 stitches on 3 mm double-pointed needles. Slip the first edge stitch, knit 2 stitches, knit the last edge stitch purlwise. Without turning the work and continuing to look at the right side of the fabric, move the stitches to the beginning of the needle. Again, slip the first edge stitch (pull the free thread so that your narrow fabric starts to twist inward), knit 2 stitches, purl the last edge stitch. You have knitted 2 rows of the i-cord. Continue knitting to the desired length.

Wet heat treatment:

During washing, do not wring out or lift the soaked fabric out of the water by the edges. Gently immerse the item in soapy water (we recommend using Hollywool lanolin soap), saturate it with water, slightly squeeze it (the yarn is clean, it doesn’t have impregnations that require washing out) therefore wet heat treatment is only needed to give the item its true size and to distribute the stitches evenly. Gently squeeze it in the sink or basin (without lifting by the edges).

Transfer the item onto a dry towel, press it in the towel and then spread the item on a new dry towel, without stretching it, but giving it the desired and correct shape. After drying, the snood will return to its original size, becoming fluffy and neat. After the item dries, thread the cord through the hole.
