Outils
- 1 skein of Filcolana Anina yarn
- 2.5 mm needles, 40 cm in length, and 2.5 mm double-pointed needles or on a long cord
Jauge
Gauge is measured in the main pattern – a 2×2 rib.
The gauge for the ribbing, in an unstretched state, should be 38 stitches over 40 rows in a 10×10 cm square.
Use 2.5 mm needles or needles that match the gauge of 3.8 stitches and 4 rows per 1 cm.
Instructions
Cast on 144 stitches + 1 for joining in the round using the German twisted cast on (it’s elastic and won’t tighten the initial knitting row). Close the stitches into a round.
With 144 stitches on the needles, knit in a 2×2 rib pattern for a height of 21 cm. Afterward, begin the decreases.
Diminutions
Divide the 144 stitches into 4 sections, placing markers every 36 stitches. Hang a marker so that it is positioned between the knit stitches.
The row consisting of 2 knit stitches with a marker will determine the direction of the decreases. Decreases to the right and left of it (tracks) will create slanting decreases. Ensure the evenness of these 2 stitches.
Row 1 – slip the first marker onto the right needle, then purl the next stitch through the back loop. Knit 2 stitches together (knit and purl) with a left slant. Continue knitting according to the pattern, stopping 2 stitches before the marker (purl and knit). Insert the needle into both stitches from left to right and knit them together with a right slant. Continue making decreases to the right and left of the marker. You will make a total of 8 decreases in this row. You now have 136 stitches on the needles.
Row 2 – knit without decreases, following the pattern.
Next, continue knitting for 18 more rows (you’ve already completed 2), alternating between a row with decreases and a row without decreases. This should leave you with 64 stitches on the needles.
From this point on, make decreases in every row until you have only 8 stitches left on the needles.
Knit these 8 stitches – 2 together as a knit stitch, and then tighten 4 stitches to close. Your hat is complete! In its unfolded state, the length of the piece should be 27 cm.
This one-size-fits-all should fit head circumferences from 48 to 58 cm, thanks to the elasticity of the merino wool.
