Gauge
Post blocking gauge: 1 pattern repeat (8 sts x 6 rows) = 3 cm x 2 cm.
For an accurate gauge, it is recommended to cast on more stitches for the sample so that its size is 10 cm x 10 cm. Perform wet blocking, let the sample dry completely, then measure the number of stitches/rows in 1 pattern repeat.
If you do not achieve the specified gauge, try changing to a larger or smaller needle size.
Work Description
Using 40-60 cm circular needles size 3.5 mm (or size needed to achieve the correct gauge), cast on 144 sts +1 st for joining in the round. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.
Distribute the stitches according to the pattern for circular knitting, starting from the 3rd row, and work 10 pattern repeats in height. Finish this section with the 2nd row of the pattern repeat.
Next, to create a smooth rise, continue with short turn rows as detailed in the pattern instructions, including yarn overs and stitch counts for each row.
Continue with turn rows, slipping the first edge stitch without knitting and knitting the last edge stitch.
Knit a knit row according to the pattern and starting from the following (purl) row, make increases in every 4th row a total of 4 times in the specified sequence, using markers to highlight the central 27 sts.
After completing all the increases, work upwards for another 4 pattern repeats and proceed to decrease stitches symmetrically in every 4th row, starting with a purl row, four times, knitting 2 stitches together with a right and left slant.
For a beautiful crown shaping, work cable crosses ending with the crown shaped like the classic heel turning in sock knitting. Isolate the central 21 stitches and follow the decrease instructions until 23 stitches remain on the needles.
Try on the piece to check fit. For a deeper fit, continue decreasing stitches until 21 sts remain.
Next, move on to the edging of the hood, performing the edging with needles 0.5-0.75mm smaller than those used for the main fabric. Pick up stitches from each edge stitch capturing only the outer loop, including stitches on the waste yarn.
Knit 5 cm in ribbing (1 knit st, 1 purl st repeat) in the round, picking up an additional stitch if needed for symmetry. In the first row, knit yarn overs together with adjacent stitches so that the yarn over is on the bottom.
Fold the knitting in half and join with the Kitchener stitch.
Wet-Heat Treatment
